Iodized and Coarse Salt for Malaysia, Halal Certified

We supply Malaysian importers with iodized fine salt for consumption and coarse krosok salt for processing, shipped from Indonesia under ATIGA with a Form D certificate of origin.

Trade between Indonesia and Malaysia

Indonesia and Malaysia trade under the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA). To claim the ATIGA preferential tariff, the importer presents a Form D certificate of origin, which we arrange for qualifying shipments. Goods travel by container from the port of loading ([awaiting data]) to the port you specify, such as Port Klang, Penang, Pasir Gudang or a port in Sabah or Sarawak.

Universal salt iodisation: what it means for your order

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health made universal salt iodisation mandatory from 30 September 2020, at 20–40 mg/kg (source). Salt sold for consumption must therefore be iodized. Buyers who need non-iodized salt for processing should confirm with the Ministry of Health or a regulatory consultant whether their use is exempt.

Our iodized SKUs are Iodized Fine Salt Mesh 16, Mesh 18, Mesh 20, Mesh 26 and Iodized Powder Salt K100. Their KIO3 content is reported per batch on the COA ([COA]).

Watch the unit. Indonesia’s SNI 3556:2016 sets a minimum of 30 mg/kg expressed as KIO3 (source), which is about 17.8 mg/kg expressed as iodine; that is below 20 mg/kg if Malaysia’s range is read as iodine. State the target level and its unit in the contract so that production is set for the Malaysian requirement. Units are explained on the iodine content page.

Halal certification

Our salt is Halal certified; the issuing body and certificate number are [awaiting data] and will be published with the certificate. Malaysian importers and retailers often require a foreign Halal certificate to come from a body recognised by JAKIM. Check that recognition for our certification body before you order; a copy of the certificate is available on request.

Terms Malaysian buyers search for

Many Malaysian buyers search in Malay, with terms such as “garam kasar 50kg” or “pembekal garam kasar” (coarse salt supplier). Garam kasar corresponds to our coarse salt K1, K2 and K3, which we can pack in 50 kg sacks. “Garam halus” is fine salt, and “garam beriodin” is iodized salt.

Buyer questions

Does salt exported to Malaysia have to be iodized?

Salt for consumption in Malaysia must be iodized at 20–40 mg/kg, a rule in force since 30 September 2020. For food and retail use, order an iodized SKU and state the target level and its unit in the contract. If you need non-iodized salt for processing, confirm with the Ministry of Health whether your use is exempt.

Is your Halal certificate recognised by JAKIM?

We have not yet confirmed JAKIM recognition, so please check it before ordering. Our salt is Halal certified, and the issuing body and certificate number will be published with the certificate. JAKIM keeps a list of recognised foreign Halal certification bodies; your Halal consultant or JAKIM can confirm whether ours is included.

Can you supply garam kasar in 50 kg sacks?

Yes, our krosok coarse salt, known in Malaysia as garam kasar, is available in 50 kg woven PP sacks, as well as 25 kg sacks and 1-tonne jumbo bags. Grades are K1, K2 and K3. Pack format, MOQ and price are confirmed in the quotation for your specification.
