Coarse, fine and iodized salt specifications: what buyers should check

A salt specification is read from NaCl content, moisture, insoluble matter, particle size (mesh), iodine expressed as KIO3, and heavy metals. Values for each Ventura SKU are issued per batch in a certificate of analysis (COA).

Parameters to check before you buy

Reference limits below come from SNI 3556:2016, the Indonesian standard for iodized consumption salt (source). They are a benchmark, not Ventura product specifications.

Grade and NaCl content
K1, K2 and K3 are quality labels for Indonesian coarse (krosok) salt. The binding figure in a contract is NaCl in % on a dry basis (adbk). SNI 3556:2016 requires at least 94% dry basis. See salt grades K1, K2, K3.
Moisture
Water adds weight without adding NaCl and makes salt more prone to caking. SNI 3556:2016 sets a maximum of 7%. Set a tighter limit if your process needs drier salt.
Water-insoluble matter
Sand, clay and other particles left behind when the salt is dissolved. It matters most for brine making and water-softener regeneration. SNI 3556:2016 limit: 0.5% maximum.
Particle size (mesh)
For fine salt, state the mesh number together with the sieve aperture in millimetres, for example Mesh 20 = 0.841 mm on the US standard sieve series. Full table: salt mesh size.
Iodine as KIO3
SNI expresses iodine as potassium iodate (KIO3), minimum 30 mg/kg. WHO and Malaysia use a 20–40 mg/kg range on a different basis. The conversion is explained under iodine content.
Heavy metals
SNI 3556:2016 limits lead (Pb) to 10 mg/kg and cadmium (Cd) to 0.5 mg/kg. Ask for these results on the COA when the salt goes into food.

Specification status of our 11 salt SKUs

NaCl, moisture, insoluble matter and KIO3 for every SKU are filled from the per-batch COA. Millimetre values for mesh refer to the US standard sieve series.

Download TDS and COA

Technical data sheets (TDS) and COAs will be published per SKU on each product page: [awaiting data]. Until then, request the TDS and the latest batch COA through a quotation request. State the SKU, the quality limits you accept and the documents your destination country requires.

A COA applies to one production batch. When the goods arrive, match the batch number on the COA with the label on the bags. If you need third-party laboratory testing, say so in the enquiry so that samples can be drawn from the same batch.
