What a per-batch COA contains
A COA (Certificate of Analysis) reports laboratory results for one production batch. For salt, the parameters usually tested are listed below. The last column is filled from Ventura's COA for each batch; until the documents are available, it is marked as pending.
| Parameter | Unit | What it measures | Batch value |
|---|---|---|---|
| NaCl (sodium chloride) | % dry basis | Purity of the salt with water excluded from the calculation | [COA] |
| Moisture | % w/w | Water left in the crystals; affects caking and net weight | [COA] |
| Water-insoluble matter | % w/w | Sand, silt and other particles that do not dissolve | [COA] |
| KIO3 (potassium iodate) | mg/kg | Iodine fortificant level, iodized line only | [COA] |
| Lead (Pb) | mg/kg | Heavy-metal contaminant | [COA] |
| Cadmium (Cd) | mg/kg | Heavy-metal contaminant | [COA] |
| Particle size | % passing / retained on sieve | Crystal size distribution against the agreed mesh sieve | [COA] |
A COA also states the batch number, production or sampling date and the test method. Mesh-to-millimetre conversion is on the salt mesh size page.
Reference: SNI 3556:2016 for iodized consumption salt
SNI 3556:2016 is the Indonesian national standard for iodized consumption salt. Its quality requirements are shown here as a reference for buyers comparing specifications. This table does not state that Ventura products are SNI certified; our SNI certificate or product registration number: [awaiting data].
| Parameter | SNI 3556:2016 requirement |
|---|---|
| NaCl | min. 94% (dry basis) |
| Moisture | max. 7% |
| Water-insoluble matter | max. 0.5% |
| KIO3 | min. 30 mg/kg |
| Lead (Pb) | max. 10 mg/kg |
| Cadmium (Cd) | max. 0.5 mg/kg |
Source: Indonesian Journal of Chemical Science, UNNES. A revision is in progress as RSNI3 3556:2024. 30 mg/kg KIO3 corresponds to about 17.8 mg iodine/kg (iodine is 59.3% of KIO3 by mass); see iodine content in salt.
Quality checks you can request
The sequence below is common QC practice for food and industrial salt. State in your quotation request which steps you need; how each is carried out and which documents come with it is confirmed per order.
- 01
Sampling per batch
Samples are drawn from the batch being shipped and carry the same batch number as the sacks or jumbo bags, so test results trace back to the goods you receive.
- 02
Laboratory testing
The sample is tested for the parameters in the COA table. If you use a specific test method or laboratory, say so at the start so the results can be compared with your own data.
- 03
Sieve analysis
For fine and powder salt, particle size distribution is checked on the agreed sieve, so Mesh 20 in the contract means the same size on the COA.
- 04
Retention sample
Part of each batch sample is kept as a reference in case questions arise after delivery. You can ask for the retention period to be written into the agreement.

Matching the COA to your specification
Before ordering, send the specification you work to: NaCl limit, maximum moisture, mesh size and, for iodized salt, the KIO3 or iodine level with its unit. The sample COA can then be checked line by line against your requirements.
For export, some buyers appoint a surveyor or third-party laboratory at the port of loading. If you need one, mention it in your request; arrangements and cost are agreed per order. Documents that usually accompany an export shipment are listed on the export page.
